The Stonewall Brigade is a Potomac Appalachian Trail Club crew that performs trail maintenance and improvements in the Great North Mountain area of the Lee District of the George Washington National Forest. Great North Mountain is located along several scenic mountain ridges between Woodstock, VA and Wardensville, WV. The Stonewall Brigade is made up solely of volunteers, who enjoy spending time in the outdoors to keep the trails in good condition. With only a few exceptions (see Planning Details, at the left), anyone with an interest in joining the crew for one day or on a regular basis is very welcome. No experience is necessary.

Co-leaders of the Stonewall Brigade are Don Upton and Lee Manning. You can email them at Email is preferred. Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have. You can reach Don at (703) 430-4656, or Lee at (703) 560-0960.

We usually meet on the first or second Saturday of each month at 9:00am at the Wolf Gap Recreation Area campground parking lot on Great North Mountain. Check our "Schedule of Outings" link for a detailed list of work trips. Please contact us before each outing to let us know you are coming, and to check for any changes in meeting place or meeting time.

Please be on time or you may miss final arrangements for the day. We will have introductions, get tools, have a short safety discussion, and leave for the worksite. Some worksites are within walking distance; others are a short drive. We will normally return to the meeting area between 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm. Allow approximately two hours driving time from the Beltway exit onto I-66. (This should be more than ample time but not really enough time to stop for coffee along the way.)

Wolf Gap Recreation Area is located on the Virginia/West Virginia state line and VA route 675. It is approximately eight miles west of Woodstock, VA. (click here for directions and a map). GPS position is 38 55.460' N, 78 41.346' W.

Our territory may all be seen on the excellent PATC Map "F", which depicts the entire Great North Mountain area of the George Washington National Forest. This map is available either at PATC Headquarters in Vienna, Virginia, or can be purchased via the internet at the PATC Map Store.
